The transition to a decarbonised economy is an important accelerator of growth and technological advancement in the energy industry, as well as generating a positive environmental, social and economic impact. At the social level, new employment and requalification opportunities for both individuals and communities will be seen in industry, compensating for the reduction of jobs in certain segments.

We fully support the principles of a just transition (just socio-ecological transition) so that no one is left behind, even in the short term, and we are aware of the social impact of our climate strategy, which represents a broader commitment in line with the Group's approach to respecting human rights along the value chain,  as also set out in our Human Rights Policy.

In 2019, the Enel Group signed the United Nations letter of commitment to a just transition and the creation of decent and "green" jobs by:

  • promote social dialogue with workers and their trade unions, respecting workers' rights, promoting social protection and providing wage guarantees, in accordance with International Labour Organization (ILO) standards
  • Work with suppliers that respect these standards, while contributing to the social and economic development of local communities most exposed to the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy.

Our action plan for a Just Socio-Ecological transition

At the heart of our strategy is the objective of helping to build a fairer and more inclusive society throughout the entire value chain, while protecting the environment in which we live and creating future opportunities for the company and for our stakeholders, leaving no one behind.

We are committed to managing this transition through a strong and ongoing dialogue with unions to put the Just Transition principles into practice as they affect all those directly involved in the process, in particular through the conversion of plants to coal and related sites.

Enel Américas seeks synergies between its business strategy and the development of the territories in which it is present, advancing under a shared purpose with its stakeholders.

The retraining of those directly affected by the energy transition is essential to support local economies and market competitiveness and to be prepared to create new employment and requalification opportunities.

We are committed to providing training programs for workers involved in the process of decarbonization of the energy matrix.

~55%
of people who left coal plants in 2021 have been relocated and have attended upskilling and skills reskilling programs (110 hours per capita)
~90%
Coal employees redeployed within the perimeter of Enel Green Power and Thermal Generation
~10%
Coal employees relocated to other Enel business areas

In the countries where we operate, support mechanisms are available for certain segments of the population to help pay the cost of electricity, in order to enable equitable access to energy, as well as a range of energy-efficient products. that help consume less energy and produce fewer emissions.

For example, in order to promote social inclusion in Colombia, we have developed the Codensa Crédito Fácil credit card, a financial product for the most vulnerable segments of the population who cannot access credit through traditional banking channels and designed for Enel customers in the city of Bogotá and in the Colombian department of Cundinamarca. By the end of 2021, more than 75,000 people had benefited from this initiative, of which more than 50% were women.

Enel has launched a variety of projects to make our supply chain increasingly resilient. In Italy, we launched the Supplier Development Program. By signing agreements with the main players, we ensure favorable conditions compared to those of the market and include a contribution to cover a part of the services provided within the scope of the program, including financial instruments that can facilitate access to liquidity and assistance Technical and management training programs to assist in business conversion.

In 2021 in Italy, our Group also applied the social clause beyond the legal requirements, allowing more than 1,900 workers to keep their jobs despite a change in the tender.
